ABOUT US

We are a coalition of human rights organizations and activists from European Union member states and neighboring countries.

We acknowledge the alarming reality of politically motivated persecution in Europe: citizens, including activists, journalists, and political opponents, are deprived of their liberty on charges that are political in nature. Systemic issues within justice and penitentiary systems create grounds for abuses. To effectively counter these challenges, we established the International Coalition. Our mission is to protect the rights of persons deprived of liberty for political motives, advocate for their release and rehabilitation, and promote the rule of law as a fundamental value of Europe.

MISSION & CHARTER

Our work is grounded in international law, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the principles of impartiality, transparency, and solidarity. We assess each case solely on the basis of legal facts, regardless of the individual's political views.

01

RECOGNITION OF POLITICAL PRISONERS

To achieve official recognition at the level of EU institutions, national parliaments, and within society of the existence of individuals imprisoned for political motives. Our ultimate goal is their release and rehabilitation.

02

LEGAL MONITORING

To systematically collect, analyze, and publish verified information on cases of politically motivated persecution, using strict legal criteria and a robust methodology.

03

ADVOCACY & REFORMS

To conduct advocacy campaigns aimed at establishing effective legal safeguards against politically motivated prosecution. We engage with EU institutions, the ECtHR, and national authorities to strengthen judicial independence and the right to a fair trial.

04

PUBLIC AWARENESS

To raise awareness among the European public and media about the issue of political imprisonment and its connection to broader challenges to the rule of law. We promote alternatives to imprisonment and the humanization of the penitentiary system.

Decision on Support

Based on the legal opinion, the Coordinating Council decides whether to include the case under the Coalition's mandate and determines the forms of support.
